The museum was built in 1956, with a construction area of ​​over 21,000 square meters and an exhibition area of ​​over 13,000 square meters. The plan is in the shape of a mountain, with five floors in the middle, three floors with two wings, and an exhibition hall at the rear, with a circular lecture hall at the rear. There are corridors with a width of 4 meters on both sides of the exhibition hall, which are connected to the two wings. The building was designed by Soviet experts in a unique style. The Provincial Museum has a History Hall, Revolutionary Cultural Relics Hall, Nature Hall, and Socialist Construction Exhibition Hall. It is also equipped with a cultural relics storage room, a Han Jian room, a cultural relics laboratory reproduction room, and the Jiayuguan Wei and Jin tomb paintings. Basic exhibitions include Gansu Historical Relics, Jiayuguan Wei Jin Mural Tombs , Yellow River Elephants , Gansu Natural Rich Source and Gansu Revolutionary Cultural Relics Exhibition .

The pavilion houses a variety and variety of Neolithic colored pottery and grotto art treasures, showing the development system of colored pottery in Gansu that lasted more than 7000-3000 years. Precious silk and linen fabrics, scriptures, wood, lacquer, and bronze wares, a large number of Han Dynasty and Great Wall cultural relics, as well as bronze horses and wooden horses including the famous Chinese and foreign bronze horses, gold and silver relic The Xixia texts and cultural relics, the statues and murals of the Tiantishan Grottoes, not only reproduced the scene of opening and defending the Silk Road in that year, but also fully displayed the pictures of multi-ethnic settlements in different historical periods.
