The Catalan parliament Speaker Carme Forcadell on Friday paid bail of €150,000 to be released from prison after spending a night in jail, a Spanish court said.
According to Reuters, Spain’s Supreme Court said in a statement that Forcadell would be released from the Alcala Meco prison outside Madrid after her bail payment was met.
Forcadell was among six regional lawmakers summoned before the court Thursday for a hearing, at which they were granted bail.
Spanish judge Pablo Llarena said in his ruling: “All the accused … have expressed that either they renounce future political activity or, those that remain active, will in future renounce any actions outside the constitutional framework,” according to the Guardian.
Forcadell is said to have testified the October 27 independence vote by the Catalan parliament was “declarative and symbolic” in character.
The other five lawmakers were released Thursday evening, four of them on a €25,000 bail and one without bail, Reuters reported.
Former Catalan leader Carles Puigdemont tweeted Thursday night: “Carme Forcadell will spend the night in prison for allowing a democratic debate. For allowing speaking and voting! That’s Spanish democracy for you.”
