At least eight people were reported dead and more than a dozen injured in downtown Manhattan on Tuesday afternoon after a driver in a pickup truck deliberately drove into pedestrians in a bike lane. An unidentified 29-year-old male was arrested and taken into custody at the scene.
The driver reportedly yelled “Allahu Akbar!” after exiting the vehicle. In a press conference, New York Mayor Bill de Blasio said that “this was an act of terror.” Governor Andrew Cuomo said that it appeared to be a “lone wolf” attack, with no evidence of a wider plot.
The man, driving a rented Home Depot truck, entered a stretch of bike path in lower Manhattan adjacent to the West Side Highway, mowing down pedestrians for about 20 blocks. He got out of the truck at an intersection near the World Trade Center, brandishing a paintball gun and a pellet gun. A uniformed police officer confronted the man, shooting him in the abdomen.
“What happened was there was a car crash … he came out of one of the cars. He had two guns. We thought it was a Halloween thing. He started running around the highway. There was another guy in a green shirt that was chasing him around,” a student at nearby Stuyvesant High School told the New York Post.
New York’s Madison Mills was at the scene, and interviewed an eyewitness who described the scene:
President Trump was briefed on the matter. He tweeted, “In NYC, looks like another attack by a very sick and deranged person.”
