Dr. Fontem was given a distinction bag called 'Abah Mongouu', which is one of the biggest distinctions in the Bafut Fondom. The bag is a symbol goodness and abundance. This means that Dr. Fontem will have to put in good and great things and bring to the Bafut Fondom and the people of Southern Cameroons.

According to the Bafut tradition, this distinction is usually conferred to warriors only during the Bafut Annual Fon's dance/festival known as 'Abine Nfor' (Fon's dance), which is very rare on ordinary events.

Dr. Fontem was arrested in Buea on January 17, 2017 together with Barrister Agbor Balla, and both men were ferried to Yaounde, where they were detained in the Yaounde Kondengui Central prison for close to eight months alongside other anglophones arrested in connection with the ongoing anglophone crisis.

55 of them including Justice Ayah Paul Abine were released on August 31st, following a Presidential Decision to discontinue the non-existing case against them.

Barrister Agbor Balla was given a similar reception in his Manyu Division of origin, where he was crowned with the title of 'Sesekou', (King of the land).
