Minister Issa Tchiroma Bakary Rejects The UNHCR Claims About The Hasty Deportation Of Nigerian Refugees From Cameroon
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, representative to Nigeria  Jose Antonio Canhandulahas condemned Cameroon's decision to deport some  887 Nigerians refugees from the Minawao Refugee camp in Far North Region of Cameroon.

Even though Jose Antonio acknowledged that the recent attacks in the Northern Region Region might have made Cameroonian authorities 'nervous' he told AFP in an interview on Friday that it was “not the time to repatriate” and that Cameroon had a responsibility to give asylum to those who have fled.

In managing security they (Cameroon) are forgetting they also have to manage asylum,” he said, adding that by forcing back Nigerians, they were sending them “back to the fire”.
"Cameroonian authorities sent trucks to deport the refugees who only had time to take few of their belongings". He said.

The UN refugee agency also voiced concerns that Cameroon was forcing Nigerians to return because of the pressure it puts on already over-stretched services at camps.

This is not the first time the UNHCR representative has condemned Cameroon's decision to hastily deport refugees back to Nigeria. In March this year, they accused Cameroon of deporting more than 600 refugees unannounced.
Reacting to these accusations, Cameroon government's spokesperson and Minister of Communication Issa Tchiroma Bakary says the UN Refugee Rep's accusations are 'baseless'.
"This is a baseless accusation whose sole objective is not only to discredit the Cameroon government, but it also wants to question the hospitality of the Cameroonian people, because there has never been any forceful deportation of refugees from Cameroon" Tchiroma expressed.
The Minister also stressed that the camp that was constructed to host 30 000 refugees, now hosts 70 000 refugees, and that the Cameroon government has just refused to stretch the camps.
