Catholic Church - 30 years after the alledged apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Nsimalen - Yaounde -Cameroon, the church finally speaks

Pilgrims at the apparition site

Celebrating a pontifical mass in honour of the 30th anniversary marking the Phenomenal Apparition of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Nsimalen Yaounde last Friday 13th May 2016, the Arch-Bishop of the Yaounde Metropolitan city Monsignor Jean Mbarga said:  " henceforth, we shall not be talking of the 'Nsimalen Phenomenon', but of the 'Alledged Nsimalen Apparition  ' ".

Meaning that the credibility of the apparition is  gaining grounds, due to countless number of miracles happening there.

The Arch Bishop was making it clear that the Blessed Virgin Mary truly appeared in Nsimalen on the 13th of May 1986, and ever since then, the place has been known for it's Sanctitity and strong devotions to Mary the Mother of God, eventhough alot of controversies have and are still been said of the apparition.

on January 1 2006, His Eminence Christian Cardinal Tumi visited the place  and presided at a Pontifical Mass on the grounds for the first time.

Since May 13, 1986, Christians have been visiting the apparition site in their numbers to table their various petitions to God through the powerful intercession of Mother Mary.

Some  carry along with them fallen leaves and soil from beneath the tree where Our Lady spent nine days to use as spiritual fortifiers back at home.

Subsequently, a grotto was built beneath the said tree, for adoration. Peace could still not reign because  some people contested and still contest the authenticity of the apparition.

Others seized the opportunity to make themselves rich, by selling relics from the tree.

Controversies continue till date as pilgrims are tagged "occultists", and quarrels among Christians is the order of the day.

The brutal death of Rev Sr Pelagie Mballa on the site on October 1989 brought the controversy to climax, and on February 28, 2002, the government, with the support of the then Archbishop of Yaounde, Late Mgr Andrée Wouking, destroyed all erected symbols of piety in that neighbourhood.

On May 30, 2004, an Episcopal Decree from Mgr Tonye Bakot raised this locality to a Sanctuary. He declared therein that the sanctuary would be dedicated to Marian devotion (Canon 1230). On October 2, 2005, a Rector and his Vice were appointed at the helm of the Sanctuary.

A commission was then set up to investigate  the "Nsimalen Phenomenon."

During the January 1, 2006 Pontifical High Mass there, it was officially proclaimed that a Basilica would be built on the site.

Apparitions of such genre are not easily taken into consideration by church because a similar incident happened in Portugal 99 years ago.

In 1917, Our Lady appeared to three shepherd children; Lucia 10 years, Francisco 9 years, and Jacinta 7 years old  on the 13th of May in a town called Fatima in  Portugal.

Fracisco who died in 1919, Jacinta who died in 1920 and Lucia who died in 2005 said while they playing towards the early afternoon hours of the fateful day,  they saw a bright light that struck like thunder lightening. They gathered  their flock and were preparing to hasten home, when the lightening struck the second time and as they looked up, they saw Beautiful Lady, Glittering like the Sun who told them she was from Heaven, and that they should come to the same spot on the 13th of each month for the next 5 months, where series of mysteries happened.

The church kept silence, and only opened an investigating commission in 1922. In 1930, they finally declared the authenticity of the apparitions, and also confirmed  the institution of the instructions in the messages given to the chidren by the Beautiful Lady from Heaven.

Story behind the apparition of Nsimalen - Yaounde

On Tuesday May 13th 1986, towards the early afternoon hours, the Blessed Virgin Mary appeared on a tree in Nsimalen, surrounded by Winged Creatures(Angels). The first to witness this Divine apparition were three little girls among whom was one dumb/deaf from birth. Later school children inbetween the aged of 7-10 years who were playing around the Lawn of the Catholic School compound  began seeing Her as well.

The seers described that the Sparkling Beautiful Immaculate Spotless White Lady had a normal height, and was dressed in a dazzling Cream White Gown, with a Blue Ribbon round Her Waist. Her Hands were clinged together towards Her Chest, as a sign of deep prayer, while a White Rosary hung around Her Left Wrist, and Her Hair was covered with  a White Veil.

The young seers were all frightened at this Sight, and as the news spread wider than wild fire, they began  throwing stones at Immaculate White Lady and her companion. At once, the Lady threw a stern but soft smiling glance at the confused children turned Her back at them, and departed towards the forest with all those who were with Her.

She crossed the forest paths to the marshy area of the parish, went and stood at the top of an open space, inbetween two branches of a giant tree called Akondock in the Beti language, where She stayed there for nine consecutive days.

During these nine days, She made herself visible  to all those who had heard the news and had come to confirm with their eyes.

Many strange things began happening from the third day of Her stay in that area . The soil became brighter, leaves died, branches and roots of trees were covered with lights as that of the stars. Many people repented, the sick were healed of their infirmities, and even the little girl who was born deaf and dumb regain her hearing and speech.

So many miraculous signs were being manifested, and till dates, pilgrims who go there with their different worries and troubles testify of their relieve at the apparition site.

Some young girls became messengers of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and were transmitting her messages to the people.

As time went on, many prayer groups have been created there and many messengers arose from the groups, and are still there till date.
